Compressed air is one of the most flexible utilities in a factory, but it can also be expensive when demand and compressor output are poorly matched. A system review should look beyond the compressor nameplate and examine how air is generated, treated, stored and used.
Match output to real demand
Variable Frequency Drive and Permanent Magnet compressor technologies can be useful where air demand changes through the shift because motor speed can be adjusted rather than relying only on repeated loading and unloading. The benefit depends on the actual demand profile.
Do not ignore air treatment
Dryers and filters protect downstream equipment and processes from moisture, oil and particles. Receiver tanks also help stabilize pressure and reduce rapid compressor cycling when correctly sized and integrated.
ATCLAP Compressor lists screw compressors, PM VFD compressors, dryers, filters, air receivers and two-stage screw compressor solutions, along with installation and maintenance support.
The strongest efficiency improvements usually come from measuring demand, pressure and operating hours before selecting or replacing equipment.
Measure before changing equipment
Recording compressor power, pressure and operating pattern over a representative production period helps separate a capacity problem from leaks, restrictions or control issues. That evidence also makes it easier to compare fixed-speed, VFD and other compressor options on the basis of expected duty rather than nameplate size.
